62 m² hardwood deck, hidden fixings, dead-level finish over a 240mm fall.
Why this needed an engineer.
Existing yard fell 240mm across the deck footprint. The client wanted level, no step, no visible step-down, but a level deck over sloping ground means understanding ventilation, drainage and bearer span all at once.
The engineering thinking.
Built a hybrid pier-and-beam frame that lifts the high side just enough to clear minimum sub-floor ventilation, with bearers up-sized at the long span. Hidden fasteners ride in a milled groove so the board face is clean; the fixings hold the boards into the joists, not just to them.
- Blackbutt (Eucalyptus pilularis)
- Galvanised joists
- Stainless hidden clips
A 62 m² deck that reads flat and quiet under foot. No squeaks, no cup, two summers in.
